Journal Friday - covering unwanted areas in magazine ads

Yesterday I was able to complete a page in my collage journal and decided to bring you all along to watch as I covered up unwanted areas on a magazine page.  I really liked the image and wanted to use it, without cutting the unwanted parts off.  So, I decided to cover up those areas with roses and butterfly wings.

I wanted to share this with you, because there are so many wonderful magazine images out there but a lot of them have unwanted areas, words, and even ladies with amazing expressions on their faces and a lack of clothing in the appropriate areas. lol  But, it's not hard to cover those areas up with flowers, butterfly wings, watch faces, jewelry and such.  You could also use your own cut-out title to cover up places, too.  I have even (very lightly) used matching acrylic paint to cover up some things but I don't do that often, because the paint can cause the magazine paper to wrinkle up and sometimes it doesn't like to dry flat and smooth.

Thanks so much and if you have any questions, please ask in the comments and I will get back with you as soon as I can!

Have a wonderful day!

ICAD 2013 - Day 1

Whoo Hoo!!! It's icad time again!!! Click here to see the cards that I created last year....not sure if I shared them all here or not....I need to check!

So, with out further ado....here's my first icad card for 2013!  If you would like to watch me create this card then click here. ;-)

I hope you all decide to join in on the fun!

voices carry - an art journal page

Hi everyone!  I'm still here working out some of the ickies that have been locked away.....sorry for the not so happy journal pages. lol  But that's the great thing about your journal right and what it's for, right?

I was driving home from dropping my little one off at pre-kindergarten and this song came on the radio.  I am a MAJOR 80's junkie and still quite stuck there I'm afraid. lol  As soon as I heard this verse, I knew that I had to journal it and thank goodness my little guy went down for a nap so that I was able to do this page not long after hearing this song.

You can watch me create this page here.....

The mesh is actually self-adhesive dry wall tape....

I stamped the letters on the corrugated packaging that was in a box of taco shells. lol

Thanks so much for visiting and I hope you are all having a wonderful and creative week!
God Bless!

icad - day 16 - step by step art

I wasn't able to video making todays card, but I did snap some pictures along the way to share with you.  I was cleaning things up in my closet the other day and I found this fabric clothing tag that I'd stashed away to use in a project.  So, there's no better time than the present, right? lol  I found a few other things to go along with it and here's what I came up with....

Mod Podge on book paper that I've been spraying onto from other projects and the fabric, clothing tag....

two colors of brown, acrylic paint with a stencil....

added some red color spray because the brown didn't work as well as I wanted it to....

then added some white color spray because things were getting too dark for me....

found this paper w/ the quote on it that worked perfect with the tricycle stamp....

still too dark for me, so I added some white drippage....because I love drippage lol....went around the edges w/ black ink....

Mod Podge on the paper elements and added some white acrylic paint w/ some bubble wrap....

and here's the finished card:

Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope that you're enjoying icad 2012 as much as I am!  I really need to sit down one night and visit everyone's blogs, flickr, etc...I know that I am missing out on loads of amazing art work that everyone else is doing.  Oh, and be sure to visit Daisy Yellow to learn all about icad2!

Take care and God Bless!

icad2 - day 15

This was a fun and quick card that I put together for Day 15.  I used the piece of notebook paper that I had placed on top of a stencil covered w/ Tumble Dye spray on my  Day 16 card.  I always place my sprayed-on stencils on some sort of paper (book, music, notebook, etc) or into my journal on blank pages.  If you just leave it there, all of that inky goodness transfers onto the paper and you have something new and colorful to use in another project.  It's great to do in my journal, because sometimes it gives me inspiration for a art journal page or just relieves the stress of opening up your journal and looking at a blank page....thinking....hum...what to do?  Having a bit of color there says, "Hey, look! add more to me!" Well, that's what it says to me. lol

So, I really loved the notebook paper and didn't want to cover it up too much.  I just added a felt heart, a couple of pieces of tape, splatters of paint...not much else.

I made of video of me creating this card and see it here. You can watch my videos at my YouTube page and be sure to subscribe so that you will receive an email each time I upload a new video. ;-)

And be sure to visit Tammy's site, Daisy Yellow, to learn all about icad2!

icad2 - day 14

I'm having lots of fun finding things in my piles of "stuff" that I've been hoarding and using them on my icad2 cards.  This one uses an ad for Sally Hansen nail polish.  I love all of the colors on this ad and I'm really loving how this one turned out!  I used gel medium to do an image transfer onto the index card.  I let the card sit overnight and then rubbed water onto the card w/ my finger to remove the paper.

I've also been using up bits and pieces of book paper that I've been spraying onto while working on previous cards.  For this card, I first sprayed on some Tumble Dyes and placed a piece of notebook paper on top of the stencil to soak up all of that extra spray.  I just can't waste that stuff! lol  I loved how it turned out and ended up using that notebook paper as the base of my card for Day 16.  I'm really trying to use up what I have and recycle odds and ends that I stumble upon.

You can watch me create this card here.  Be sure to visit my YouTube page and subscribe.  You will get an email each time I add a new video.  :-)

I saw "Rock of Ages" last night and I'm trying to come up with an idea for today's card to remember last night by.  I am a total 80's junkie!  But have to admit that I was into the "new wave" scene and not the hair band's. ;-)  I still thought that movie was lots of fun and it sure did bring back some memories! lol

I hope you all have a wonderful day today!  We are going to hit some antique stores today and I'm hoping to find some neat ephemera to use in my mixed media art.

God Bless!

icad2 - day 13

Not long ago, I picked up a bundle of eleven magazines at Half Price Book Store for $10.  It's a great place to get magazines and books for cheap to use in your mixed media projects.   I couldn't resist that stack!  The magazine is called Arts in Asia and I couldn't resist....I knew they would have some fun images that I could cut out and use in collages.  So, when I saw this painting on the front a one of the magazines, I had to use her on my next icad2 card.  I've been on a huge packing tape transfer kick, so I decided to use that technique again for that image.  The cover of the magazine is very thick so it took awhile to get all of the paper off, but I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Be sure to visit Tammy's blog, Daisy Yellow, to read all about icad2.  You can start anytime, no worries, no being behind....just create!  And, I can't tell you how wonderful it is to work on these little cards!  Quick, easy, fast, done. lol  It usually takes me under 30 minutes to do a card.  I just love it!

The corrugated paper is from the inside of a envelope that I received in the mail the other day.  It had my monthly Disney movie club DVD in it. lol   I absolutely love texture and I really love using odds and ends from this and that that....things you'd usually just throw away.  I almost see it as a challenge! lol   I also used a piece of book paper that I have been spraying onto while creating other cards.  Waste not, want not, right? lol The decided to leave the wooden butterflies plain, even though you can paint them.  I figured there was enough going on behind them and I like just being able to see the plain wood. ;-)

I did a video of me creating this card and you can watch it here. ;-)

So, be sure to visit my YouTube page and subscribe to my page.  That way you will get notifications in your email each time I upload a new video.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog today and I hope that you are able to spend some time creating today!

icad2 - day 12

This is a late night card. lol  I think it was after midnight when I started it, was really tired but just really needed to get my fingers dirty.  It is totally inspired by art by the amazing Christy Tomlinson.  I have taken a few of her online classes and I highly recommend them!!!

I used the corrugated paper that comes from a package of Oreo cookies.  This shows you how I can't through anything away if I think it will work for a mixed media project. lol  I also used some old rub-ons that I found while rummaging around in my art drawers.  I had stamped the house onto book paper a long time ago and ended up not using it.  So, as I've been working on other projects, I've used it as scrap paper to spray on top of and wiped excess paint on.  So, all I had to do was cut it out and add it to my card.  The house is from Paperbag Studios and the name of the set is Doodles & Daters Unmounted Rubber Stamp Set.

No video for this one..... :-(

I hope you're all doing well!  It's a rainy day here today, so I'm hoping for some quality art time.  If I can get my little one down for a nap, of course. lol  I look forward to him being older and more independent so that I can spend better time arting, and so he can join along in creating!  But, I also know it goes by fast and he'll be grown and not wanting to be with me at all before I know it. lol  It's such a crazy thing.  You want them to grow up, but you don't. lol  My oldest will be 21 this August....so I truly know how fast time flies and I need to cherish every moment with my little ones!

Take care everyone and God Bless!

icad2 - day 11

For this card, I started with some book paper that I've been spraying onto during other projects and wiping excess paint onto as well as some of the DIY Washi tape that I made from a Land's End Catalog.  I broke out my modeling paste and mixed in some yellow, hard body acrylic paint, scraped it over a stencil and made the flowers.....

You can watch me create this card here. I did add some more flowers and the button after I finished the video.  It just needed a little more on it before I was happy with it!

Thanks so much for visiting and TGIF!

icad2 - day 10

I'm a coffee junkie so I just had to do a card about my addiction.  lol  Especially since I was suffering from a huge caffeine withdrawal headache that whole day.  I had made a pot in the morning and messed it up so I was off on my normal coffee intake schedule. lol

I used part of a sack from Starbucks and their coffee cup sleeve.  The girl is cut from a magazine....you can watch me create this card here. :-)  I hope you all are enjoying the videos.  I'm having fun making them.  These icad cards have been such a lifesaver for me!  I was in a real rut w/ my creativity and add in two little ones and short nap times and it's been almost impossible for me to get much done.  But, these cards are nice and small and have been easy for me to start/finish in a short period of time.  I have a feeling that they are going to be my saving grace this summer vacation! lol

Thanks so much for visiting and God Bless!

icad2 - Day 9

Lots of playing around on this one and adding bits I found, like a scribbled upon piece of graph paper that my husband had also written on and the inside of a security envelope.....the flower was created with the packing tape image transfer method.  I am really having fun with that technique!

icad2 - day 8

Hi everyone!  I'm skipping Day 7's card for now, because June 7th was my 20th wedding anniversary and I wanted to do something special for it.  I've been putting things together here and there to make my card with and I hope to make it this weekend.

Be sure to visit Daisy Yellow to learn all about icad2 and how to join in on all of the fun!

So, here's my card for Day 8!

The blue cow card is part of the packaging of acrylic paints from Golden...their limited addition 3 pack of blues called "Uncommon Blues".  I've been holding onto it for awhile, because I knew it would be perfect to use for something.  I stumbled upon it the other day and just had to use it for an icad2 card.  I also used some of the "DIY Catalog Washi Tape" that I share how to make in a video here.   Those rainbow colors at the top are actually part of an ad featuring a stack of colorful shirts!

Thanks so much for visiting and God Bless!

icad2 - day 6

So, here is my card for Day 6!  It's inspired by the trip that we took to our local Half-Priced Book store that day.  I LOVE books and I love to read and much to my husbands dismay, I have books everywhere in my house!  He bought me a Kindle in hopes of cutting down on the quantity of books that are always piling up, too. lol  It helped but I have to have my cookbooks and craft books in paper form.  But, I do adore my Kindle! ;-)

icad2 - day 5

I am so behind on sharing my icad2 cards!  So, here's day 5 with a little story behind it.  My son and I were doodling early that morning and I colored a bunch of circles on a piece of brown craft paper with crayons.  I didn't realize how fitting it was because a few hours after that, we had his appointment to have allergy testing done.  His poor little back was covered with spots....more circles!  He's 17 months old and I have to tell you, it took every ounce of strength that I had to not cry along with him.  It was awful.  We did find out that he's allergic to several things, including mixed trees, mixed grasses, mixed weeds, soy, egg whites and the worst one was peanuts.  I was surprised about that one!  He's had peanut butter before and thank goodness never had a serious reaction to it.  He fell asleep on our way home and slept for 4 hours!  So while he was napping, I took out my anxiety on my icad2 card. lol  I found that paper I had colored circles on and knew I had to make a card to remember our day by......

The 23 on the card is for test #23, which was peanuts.  It was a huge, welted spot on his tiny back!

I made of a video of me creating this card and you can watch it here! ;-)

Thanks so much for visiting and be sure to check back often.  I posted several art journal pages late last night.  I realized that I have several pages that I forgot to share here!  I have lots more to share and hope to add new posts daily this week!
